What you can say? One minute you are preparing to record a wisdom story with a hare Krishna nun and the next minute you are listening to “gran-ster” rap. Mandakini Dasi, also known as the Granny Rapper performs solo and also as part of a duo with her “Prodigal Son”, entertaining audiences from ages 4yrs – 104yrs.
Granny Rapper is an accomplished thespian having spent a decade with the Murwillumbah Theatre Company as a lead actor, director, costume co-ordinator and set dresser. At present she is involved in the film industry appearing in movies and featuring in TV commercials.
Over the past 6 years, AFI nominee and award winning filmmaker, Faramaz-K Rahber, has been documenting the life of Granny Rapper. The documentary is scheduled to conclude in the UK when Gran and the Prodigal Son return to their hometown Liverpool, England.
For the past 20 years and when she is not being the Granny Rapper she is actively involved in Community Welfare work particularly focusing on youth and the aged.
In 2008, they produced a 5 track EP, “Let the Granny Rap”(available on iTunes). In 2016, they completed an album entitled “Prankster Gangsters” (available on iTunes). The album consists of 12 original tracks and a re-worked hip hop version of ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ by ” Gerry and the Pacemakers”.
